Well isn't this embarrassing? After Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended for 50 games for being busted for testosterone, the club had to cancel an order for 20,000 T-Shirts that were supposed to feature the 2012 All-Star Game MVP's last name and number on the back.
The Giants were planning on giving the shirts out to fans on September 8th against the rival Dodgers. Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter said they will be replaced by a "Gigantes" version with center fielder Angel Pagan's name on the back.
Cabrera was batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with the Giants. He will only be eligible to return this season if the Giants make the playoffs, as his suspension was enforced with 45 games left in the season. He is set to hit the free-agent market this winter.
The Phillies got in a similar giveaway pickle this year. On July 31st they shipped Hunter Pence to the Giants, but Philadelphia had already planned to give away his bobblehead on August 21st (last night). Instead of junking all 45,000 of them, the Phils decided to give them out with an addition in the box: A card with a note from Pence thanking the Phils fans for their support during his time there.
Hunter Pence bobblehead night went on as planned, despite the fact that he's a Giant now.
The Giants chose to change Melky's shirt to an Angel Pagan "Gigantes" version instead of this Testosterone version.
