Yunel Escobar Writes Gay Slur Below Eyes

Cuban born shortstop Yunel Escobar wore black eye strips with the words “TU ERE MARICON" written on them during the Blue Jay's Saturday afternoon game against the Red Sox.  For those of you that don't speak Spanish, “tu ere maricon" translates into “you’re a faggot” in English.  

ESPN has reported that MLB is "investigating the situation," as it is unclear if he wrote the words himself or if he was the victim of a practical joke by one of his teammates. That situation reminds me of the infamous 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken "Fuck Face" error card, which was the toast of the baseball card world for months. Story has it that Ripken was slipped a bat with the curse word  on it by a teammate before taking this sports card photo, that photo then slipped through the set editing process and was inserted into the set (see card below).

It remains to be seen if MLB will take action against Escobar, who is batting .251 for the season, but one would guess that this issue will be addressed in the near future.
