Before the New York Yankees 2-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Thursday afternoon, the Rangers honored Yankee closer Mariano Rivera by donating $5,000 to the Mariano Rivera Foundation, which helps children in need. The check was presented by Nolan Ryan, the Rangers CEO. John Wetteland, who was the Yankees closer and World Series MVP in 1996 presented Rivera, who set up for Wetland that year with a cowboy hat and a pair of cowboy boots that has the Yankees logo and Rivera's number 42 on them.
Wetteland was quoted by the Dallas Morning News as saying “Who knew that this wide-eyed kid would become the greatest closer in history? If you look back in retrospect, it makes sense, I never saw anybody who paid so much attention to detail. He would sit there quiet, but he would know what was being said. Now I tell him, ‘You never said a word, you’re always just looking at people,’ and he says, ‘I was taking it in.“’
